about mt.yotei

ezo fuji: mount yōtei
capturing the seasonal beauty
of one of japan’s 100 famous mountains.

a harmony of beauty and mystery — why hokkaido became our stage

The decision to set Ghost of Yōtei at the foot of Mount Yōtei was driven by the land’s overwhelming natural beauty, its inherent harshness, its vitality, and its profound cultural symbolism.
To truly capture the essence of this land, the development team traveled to Hokkaido, experiencing firsthand the raw power of its beautiful yet unforgiving environment. From sheer cliffs battered by crashing waves and majestic snow-capped peaks stretching to the horizon, to the chilling sight of bear claw marks left on forest trees—every encounter conveyed a palpable tension where beauty and danger coexist. This experience mirrored the game’s core theme: "the harshness of existence and the strength required to overcome it," lending an unwavering authenticity to the narrative.
Furthermore, in the early 1600s—the era in which the story unfolds—Hokkaido was known as "Ezo," a unique cultural crossroads where the indigenous Ainu people and the Wajin (mainland Japanese) intersected. This distinct history and culture provided a peerless and captivating backdrop for a tale centered on a warrior’s solitude and vengeance.

mt. yōtei: where the spirit of
matineshiri and atsu intertwine.

Ghost of Yotei main visual

During our journey across Hokkaido, we encountered Mount Yōtei—standing solitary yet majestic. This 1,898-meter standalone peak has long been cherished as "Ezo Fuji" for its near-perfect symmetry. In the Ainu language, it is known as "Matineshiri" (Female Mountain), a name that resonates deeply with our protagonist, Atsu.
To Atsu, who has lost her home and family and remains trapped in a lonely journey of vengeance, Mount Yōtei stands as a silent guardian. It became a symbol of lost warmth and the spiritual core that supports her through the struggle between revenge and conflict.
For the development team, Mount Yōtei embodies the very essence of Hokkaido. Its magnificent presence has grounded the world of the game with an unwavering sense of reality.
